Rescatux videos for the 0.3X series

I’ve recorded some videos and uploaded them to Youtube. You will find the tour one and a link to the rest of them at the Rescatux page.

Here’s the tour video:

Rescatux 0.30x series videos

Be aware that my English is far from being perfect ;).

That nearly completes the roadmap as you can see below. However I will soon release an extended roadmap for 0.30 stable release because some other issues need to be solved. Don’t worry they are minor bugs 😉 .

As I said this is Rescatux 0.30 roadmap updated:

Bugs and Feature requests they are found in Forja Cenatic. Thank you Cenatic!

Feature requests

Bugs to be fixed

Issues that need to be addressed before the release

Whenever I release a new beta the idea is to copy and paste this roadmap and to replace the dots (..) with the beta version where the feature has been implemented. An example would be: (0.30b3).

Working on findiso for Debian Live

In the last couple of days I’ve been working on findiso boot parametre for Debian live. Findiso is an originally grml boot parametre which scans all the drives searching for a given iso. Once the iso has been found it loop mounts it and the debian live systems boots up as always.

This is an improvement over the fromiso/isofrom boot parametre which forces you to specify in which drive exactly the iso is found.

Grml is a Debian Live derivative as Rescatux is. Either I had to apply (and maintain) the findiso patch myself or improve it so that it would be accepted into Debian Live. I’ve decided the second option. Just wait a few weeks so that it’s released in unstable and then just use findiso without having to apply any patch.

The findiso parametre will solve the 0.30b4 usb issues.

You can follow the bug status at Add findiso boot parametre debian issue.

There might be some problems for making use of this functionality from grub2 but I’ll deal with that too.

Recovering a Windows Password with Rescatux Video

TechChaser1 has done a nice video about Recovering a Windows Password with Rescatux . He insists that tool is legal and guaranteed (not sure about this last bit 😉 ). The great thing about the video is that he is recording an actual computer with a camera, he does no cuts and he explains himself what steps he performs.

Sometimes the screen is a little blurred but the video is more funny than my current Rescatux videos for 0.2X version.

Enjoy the video:

Super Grub Disk 0.9800 April Fools Day archived

In order not to frighten anyone else anymore I’ve decided to archive the Super Grub Disk 0.9800 April Fools Day release. Thanks to the Spanish Zimbra experts bTactic for the hosting.

I had waited some time because the file was going to be replicated into SF from berlios but it hasn’t. We will have to debug this issue later. Not to say that the next thing I am going to do is to remove the release download from berlios and some other important sites where they reference to it.

Happy 2012 April Fools’ Day

Update 1st April 2015 : You might be wondering why in 2015 or a later year you are suffering this same joke even without using Super Grub Disk 0.9800 version. The reason is that latest Super Grub2 Disk versions integrate this special functionality but it only triggers on April 1st days unlike the 0.9800 version joke which was triggered everyday.

He, he he! XD

If you have tried Super Grub Disk 0.9800 yesterday you will have noticed that were unable to write NO when asked if you wanted to delete your partitions and folders.

You might have been asked to delete your WINDOWS folder:

Or you might have been asked to delete some of your Gnu/Linux files:

Just to find that MFSTH4CK3R wanted to delete your stupid LAINUX TOY OS.

But finally it was just an April Fools Day joke:

Some more facts about the joke:

  • This is not Super Grub Disk (based on Grub1) but Super Grub2 Disk.
  • The script was designed to find no more than 23 folders or so… that meant that you would be only suffering for about 40 seconds.
  • 40 seconds time was choosen so that people didn’t have time to press ctrl+alt+del
  • 40 seconds time was choosen so that could use the disk as SG2D anyways (Having to wait till it loops into all your hard disks and filesystems is not funny the third time you see it).
  • I sent the release to Freecode (freshmeat) March 31 but instead of being published on April 1 it get published in March 31.
  • I also sent the piece of news to Barrapunto (the Spanish slashdot).
  • I don’t have time to resurrect SGD and it makes no sense with Grub2 having scripting and so on.
  • There happens to be a patch for Grub1 to make it support btrfs.
  • You can chainload Grub2 from Grub1. (/boot/grub/core.img)
  • Restore Grub2 from Grub1 with an special dd command? Might be. But not sure if it’s even possible.

And that,s it. Now I have to decide if I remove the SGD 0.9800 release of if I left it there so that I can drive people to Super Grub2 Disk and Rescatux.
